Mr. Boontawee Bunyaarak (middle), Head of Safety, Environment and Plant Integrity Management, represented Sahaviriya Steel Industries PLC or SSI received the honorably certificate from Mr. Rongphet Bunchuaidee (the 2nd from left), Deputy Executive Director of the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) (TGO) from participation in the “Project to Enhance the Business Sector on Reduction of Greenhouse Gas to Aim towards Net Zero Emission.” SSI is the pilot organization in determining Science-based Target (SBT) on reduction of greenhouse gas which conforms to the Paris Agreement on basis of climate science by keeping a global temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, as well as implementing the operation plan on greenhouse gas reduction continually. Such project has been arranged by TGO and the Center of Excellence for Eco-Energy (CEEE), Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Thammasat University. This certificate presentation has been held at Century Park Hotel, Bangkok on 18 August 2023.
SSI signed the MOU for cooperation in this project with TGO since February. Many greenhouse gas reduction projects have been undertaken, such as the project to change the green fire extinguishing tanks, the project to reduce furnace energy by using refractory coating technology and the project to improve efficiency of lamps. In addition, hot rolled coil pickled & oiled (HRC P/O), hot rolled steel sheet in coil (HRC), and steel square tube have also been certified for Carbon Footprint Label from TGO which can also contribute to the Science-based Target.
