Steel is a metal with a long history of serving the
needs of mankind. Today, steel is even more a part of
our daily lives. Countries all around the globe regard
steel as a vital part of their industrial profile, and
seek ways to exploit the latest advances in steel for
their national advantage. Thailand became serious about
developing its potential for steel production in 1988,
and began to support investments in hot-rolled, cold-rolled,
and coated steel sheet as the means to entering the
ranks of industrialized nations. This, then, was the
first step in developing modern iron and steel industries
in Thailand.
Consequently, in 1990, Sahaviriya
Steel Industries Public Co., Ltd. came into being to bolster
and reaffirm the government's policy. Development of a national
iron and steel industry was considered essential to overall
industrial growth in many sectors, as well as to meet the rising
domestic demand for steel products. Local production would replace
imports and help reduce the country's growing trade deficit,
which at that time amounted to tens of billions of baht per
year. SSI thus came to be Thailand's first producer of hot-rolled
steel sheet in coils, filling in one of thirteen industries
regarded by the government as vital to the nation's interests.
On this basis, SSI is contributing to the economic and social
security of the nation.
